Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction or fantasy that typically features steam-powered machinery, especially in a setting inspired by industrialized Western civilization during the 19th century. However, steampunk works can also be set in other time periods, or in alternate histories. Steampunk probably has more in common with the works of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne than it does with anything that typically comes to mind when you think of science fiction.
The Elements of Steampunk
Steampunk typically includes a number of elements, including:
- Steam-powered technology: This is probably the most essential element of steampunk. Machines are powered by steam, rather than by electricity.
- Goggles: These are often worn by characters to protect their eyes from flying debris or steam. They may also be used as a fashion statement.
- Dirigibles: These huge airships are a common sight in steampunk stories and settings.
- The Old West: This time period is often used as the setting for steampunk stories, as it provides a contrast to the advanced technology that is typical of the genre.
- Victorian fashion: Characters in steampunk stories often dress in clothing that is inspired by the fashions of the Victorian era. This may include corsets, top hats, and waistcoats.
- Retro-futuristic technology: This refers to technology that looks like it could have been invented during the Victorian era, but which actually uses modern materials and principles. An example of this would be a light bulb encased in brass or a computer made out of wood.
- Clockwork: Clockwork devices are also common in steampunk stories. These may be used as decorations, or they may be actual working machines.
There are many other elements that may be found in steampunk stories and settings, but these are some of the most common ones. It’s also worth noting that not all stories or settings need to include all of these elements; it’s perfectly acceptable for a story to only include one or two if that’s what fits best with the story being told.
Tips for Getting the Steampunk Effect in Your Adult Coloring Book Pages
When creating steampunk art, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- Use lots of brass: This is a material that is often used in steampunk designs, so don’t be afraid to use it liberally. Alcohol markers and gel pens are particularly well-suited for creating steampunk effects in your adult coloring book pages. You can also try adding scrapbook eyelets or brads to your finished pages for a 3-D effect.
- Incorporate Victorian elements: As mentioned above, Victorian fashion and design is often used in steampunk. Use this to your advantage when coming up with ideas for your art.
- Think outside the box: Steampunk is all about thinking outside the box and coming up with creative solutions. Don’t be afraid to experiment, and see what you can come up with!
- Have fun: Remember, steampunk is supposed to be fun! So, make sure that you’re enjoying yourself while you’re creating your art.
